Donald Trump has lost both houses of Congress, and with them the Republican majorities that spent two years passing what he asked and investigating nothing he did. The winners are not sworn in until 3 January, and Republicans keep both chambers until then. After that, every law, every dollar the government spends and every subpoena a House committee sends goes through Democrats.

Democrats cannot remove him, but they can stop the endless approval of everything he demands, and crucially, hold him accountable.

Removal after impeachment needs two-thirds of the Senate, 67 votes, and they will hold nowhere near that. The 22nd Amendment bars him from being elected a third time, which should hold him out office in the future, although he told a rally in Iowa last month "I think I have the right to run again because they cheated".

What Democrats can do is open his books, hold back his money and put the people around him under oath. Robert Garcia, who takes over the House Oversight Committee in January, marked the result with a two-word statement, "Lawyer up", indicating that this is indeed the plan.

Trump made nearly 28,700 stock trades between his inauguration and the end of June this year, more than every member of Congress combined, and as far away as we are able to check more than every U.S. President combined. Joe Biden made 13 in his whole term.
