More than 706,000 people have signed a petition asking House Democrats to vote against Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker when the new Congress meets in January, more than 468,000 of them in a single day after Tuesday's election. Nicole Whitted, a paid Change.org ambassador, started it on 3 September, and it asks Democrats to look at Jeffries' record and his donors before they vote.
A second petition, started on 4 November after AIPAC congratulated Jeffries and Chuck Schumer on their party's wins, wants both men removed as Democratic leaders in Congress. It has almost 39,000 signatures and says no one "beholden to AIPAC and/or Israel" should lead either chamber.
AIPAC named Schumer and Jeffries in the same post in which it boasted that more than 234 candidates backed by its members had won, and promised its members would "expand their political activism" in the cycles ahead. Earlier this year the same lobby helped remove Republican Thomas Massie in his primary, and celebrated putting pro-Israel replacements in the seats of Massie and Marjorie Taylor Greene, whom it called "outspoken detractors".
