A gunman killed six people in Kraków's Main Market Square on Saturday afternoon, after driving onto the square shortly after 3pm and firing "at random people from his car", police said. The regional governor's office said four women and two men died and 15 people were wounded, two police officers among them.

Police said the attacker is a 24-year-old Polish citizen who acted alone, and dismissed reports of a second gunman. He wore "military-style" clothing and fired a long military-type gun, and officers found "a very large number of other weapons and ammunition" in his car. A police spokeswoman said the people he shot were "completely random". Officers shot him when he fired back at them, and the justice minister, Waldemar Żurek, confirmed he had been wounded and detained.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on X that police were investigating "the background and all the circumstances of the attack". The Polish word he used, zamach, can also mean a terrorist attack, but no motive has been given. Deadly shootings are rare in Poland.
President Karol Nawrocki said his thoughts were with the victims and their families. Former prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki called it a massacre and wrote "No leniency for murderers!"
