Haley Stevens, the Michigan congresswoman who lost the Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed in August, endorsed the Republican Mike Rogers on Sunday, two days before the election, after attending a Detroit church service with him.
"Abdul said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away," Stevens said in a video. "And he's right. And that's why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today." She added that she is "still a very proud Democrat", a statement that is clearly untrue based on her actions today. She also said she did "not stand with Hasan Piker", the streamer who campaigned with El-Sayed. Rogers said he was "honored" to have her support.
Her chief of staff, Justin German, and much of her team resigned and endorsed El-Sayed, saying they were "shocked and heartbroken" by her decision. At a press conference with Rogers afterwards, a reporter asked why she was backing a candidate who stands against her own policies. "Well, nothing is perfect," she answered, as a man shouted "Haley Stevens is a traitor!" She was led away and took no more questions.
