On 9 September, Reuters Connect listed a 38 second clip under the headline "US CENTCOM releases video of alleged Iranian tanker sinking in Gulf of Oman" on their licensed videos page. This is where journalism outlets can purchase licenses to share videos that Reuters own or control the license of. The only issue is, Reuters didn't own the video, it was released for free by the U.S. government.
When I first noticed it, I thought it was a simple oversight. A leftover artifact of Reuters' processes that automatically paywall videos shared by the company, and that would be more than understandable, we've all made mistakes like that. But before flagging the issue, I decided to put in a request to purchase the clip.
According to the Reuters Connect purchase page, these purchase requests are reviewed by "their team", so surely the mistake that a video that is freely available via the Pentagon wouldn't come back with a price, right?
