Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a fourth term as Brazil's president on Sunday with 51.8 per cent of the vote and a lead of nearly 4.4 million over Flávio Bolsonaro with every ballot counted.
The electoral court's president, Kassio Nunes Marques, a judge appointed by Jair Bolsonaro, recognised the result and said Lula "has been re-elected and will be the 40th President of the Federative Republic of Brazil".
Flávio Bolsonaro refused to concede and said his lawyers would ask for the result to be annulled, in a five-minute speech in Brasília in which he took no questions. He said it was "impossible to concede the election result" because a Supreme Court order that kept polling stations open for two more hours "was not normal, it was unacceptable" and came from "Lula's friends on the supreme court".
