Crust News. Records desk / citable data

The records. Download them. Cite them.

Crust News keeps standing records of documented harm: Gaza. By the numbers. and Sudan. By the numbers. This page is for journalists, researchers and educators. The compiled datasets below are stable URLs, updated automatically, licensed CC BY 4.0, and every figure carries its source.

01 / What these are

Two live records, kept as ledgers

Gaza. By the numbers.

The live ledger of the Gaza genocide: killed, children, women, medical personnel, press, civil defence, injured, documented massacres. Figures are the Gaza Ministry of Health counts as published by Tech for Palestine, alongside a memorial wall of the recorded names.

Sudan. By the numbers.

The accountability ledger for the war in Sudan: deaths shown as a range from the documented minimum to expert estimates, displacement, famine, grave violations against children, attacks on health care. Sources include ACLED, UNHCR, UN OCHA, IPC, UNICEF, WHO, UN OHCHR, LSHTM and CSIS.

Sibling records on U.S. power: the Epstein Ledger (the files, the names, the deadline), the Risks to U.S. Democracy tracker, and the ICE List. Structured downloads for those are on the way; the Gaza and Sudan datasets are live now.

02 / The sourcing discipline

How the figures are kept

Every figure carries its source. No number appears in a record without an attribution and an as-of date, and both travel with the number into the downloads below.

Official and independent counts are shown side by side, never averaged. Where counts disagree, the record shows the disagreement. The Sudan record leads with a range: the ACLED documented minimum next to the CSIS expert estimate, labeled as such. The Gaza record treats the Ministry of Health count as what it is: a floor, not a total.

Update cadence. The Gaza dataset regenerates every 6 hours from the Tech for Palestine v3 summary, which tracks the Gaza Ministry of Health daily reports. The Sudan dataset regenerates every 6 hours from the live record; its underlying figures are revised by our desk as ACLED, the UN agencies and the research groups publish. Each file states its own generation time.

WSJ Opinion and Israel - a coded dataset

CC BY 4.0 / point-in-time, 2023-10-01 to 2026-07-25

A coded, purposive sample of Wall Street Journal Opinion items on Israel: directional lean, war-crime handling, author-affiliation disclosure - each with its justification. Coded corpus (v3, 25 items incl. two Russia/ICC comparators): the concede-versus-deny asymmetry - the page concedes adversaries atrocities and rejects the venue, while denying allies atrocities outright. Not a census; flagged claims live in a separate file, never asserted. Read the methodology before citing ratios.

Gaza record

CC BY 4.0 / regenerated every 6h
Columns: metric (stable key, e.g. killed_total, killed_children, killed_women, killed_medical_personnel, killed_press, killed_civil_defence, injured_total, massacres), value (integer), unit, source, as_of (ISO date of the underlying report).

Sudan record

CC BY 4.0 / regenerated every 6h
Columns: label (the ledger line, e.g. Killed, Forcibly displaced), value (a number or an honest range kept as text, e.g. 56,000 - 400,000), sub (context line), source, as_of (the source's own date).

Format notes: the CSV files open with one comment line (prefixed #) stating the record, license and generation time, then a standard header row. The JSON files carry the same rows under rows, plus record, url, license, generated and updated_cadence. Column names are stable; new metrics may be appended but existing ones will not be renamed. CORS is open, so both formats can be fetched directly from a browser or notebook.

The underlying figures remain attributed to their original sources, and citing them directly is encouraged: the Gaza Ministry of Health via Tech for Palestine; ACLED; UNHCR, UN OCHA, UN OHCHR and the other UN agencies; the IPC; UNICEF; WHO; LSHTM / Sudan Research Group; CSIS. Each row names its source.

The Gaza counter is embeddable: crustnews.com/gaza/embed/ serves a lightweight, iframe-ready version that stays current on its own. Embed instructions are on the Gaza record itself.

Questions, corrections, collaborations

If a figure is wrong, we want to know first. For corrections, methodology questions, interview requests or data collaborations, reach the desk through the contact page. Corrections to underlying figures should also go to the original source; we will follow their revisions.
